Thursday Night Spikes!!!

Independence Day weekend is approaching, and with it tons of fun outdoor things to do. The holiday falls on a Friday, which makes Thursday night a PRIME party night. But, before you go out and get smashed in the wee hours of Friday morning, I say you should come out Thursday evening and get your sandy-sweat ON!

There is a vBall court set up on Columbus Dr. in a man-made sand box. I really like this location because of its view of the city, (and the fact everybody driving down Columbus can see me) but the cherry on top is the fact the court has lights! I called the Park District today and they say simply show up with a ball. We can start a little before dusk and play till whenever folks are ready to go home and get ready for their late-night activities. Leave a comment if you have a suggestion or question.

Taking a Break…

Week 1 of ITZ volleyball went well, except for me being late. My team lost all 3 games but I think we did well for our first game together as a unit. Getting to the subject of this post, this is my last week of class for this term. We have some extra days to submit our assignments so instead of trying to complete an assignment over the weekend I’m taking a break. Being out in the sun all morning for the first time this season has definitely taken its toll on me. (If my face isn’t burned I’ll be surprised, I’m getting the itchy-pricky’s already)

It’s 5:30pm on a Saturday but I doubt I leave the house again. The beauty to playing sports, for me anyway, is the fact I can exert myself and be genuinely tired at the end of the day. I miss that…Going to work makes me tired, but it’s a different kind of tired…more of a stir-crazy, rat-race kind of tired. I prefer the athletic kind of tired, it makes the night’s rest more enjoyable. I’ll watch the NASCAR Nationwide race tonight and maybe throw a burger or two on the grill.

Oh, almost forgot…what’s that Laker fans? You cried about the officials, then accused Paul Pierce of faking…you got DID on your home floor and the Celtics really didn’t even play a good game. I’m not so much a Celtics fan, but I am a big fan of KG and Ray Allen. I’m not particularly a fan of Paul Pierce, but it seems many of the things I didn’t like about his game have been remedied with more talent around him.

Beach Volleyball – The Crown Jewel of Summer

I would have preferred to write this post from a PC so I could include images and all that, but this is a good use of my train ride. However, I just learned of one drawback to blogging via mobile device…that Devil we all know as…text messages…LOL!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned anything about my sports life in the 2008 edition of this blog. Since I’m typing with my thumbs I’ll try to be brief:

For a little more than the last calendar year (several more sport seasons) I’ve played recreational sports with In The Zone, LLC. (ITZ) Visit them here:

http://officialinthezone.com

I started with bowling quickly followed by 12″ softball. I’m an avid bowler and I have to sometimes remind myself to have fun. Conversely, I’m real gree at softball, but I’m now taking a blue-collar approach to it since I’m returning from an injury it caused. After my first bowling and softball season, the clouds parted and a ray of sunshine shone down on me called beach volleyball. I had the most fun in a summer I can recall since adulthood playing on the beach last year.

Tomorrow is the first game of this year’s beach season with ITZ. Last year I was a rookie team captain/player with a mostly rookie team. This year I’m playing on a team, but instead of team manager I’m interim League Manager. As I write I’m on the EL headed to the southside to meet a co-worker and shop for refreshments.

I have much more to say but it’ll have to wait, my thumbs have had enough.

Shoulder Updates and Spring Break

100_0100This was taken Friday. As you can see, the initial dressing has been removed. I’m due back to see the surgeon Monday. They said I’ll be dressing-free after that. I’ll tell you, I’m getting sick of being in the sling already…and I have 3 weeks left!

Moving on to a lighter subject, I’m on Spring Break from school until the 7th! The quarter technically ended Wednesday, but many instructors were allowing until Friday to submit final assignments. I needed until late Thursday and today was all play. I finally got around to cleaning the bedroom, which took most of the day since I’ve only got one arm :-) Next on my Spring Break agenda is to establish a wireless network with this Vista notebook and my Fedora 8 Linux desktop.

By the way, Formula 1 is back!

Day 2 Part II

Yesterday I decided to do something, I’m still wondering if it was the right thing to do. More than 10 years ago I had surgery on my knee and I remember that sitting in the house waiting for the pain to come was very tough. So this time I decided I would go out and try and get my mind off of the pain. Although my right shoulder is the one that is hurt, I decided I would try to go bowling with my left hand. Surprisingly I did pretty well but I certainly paid for it when I got home. I had a friend with me and she was able to shoot some videos the best one was the first one and I’ve uploaded to my Web site. The link below will let you download the video to your computer.

Day Two…

Yesterday my arm was totally numb. Today I have some feeling but not much.  I’m using the speech recognition feature in Windows Vista.  It’s a little tricky but seems to be working fine.  I’m not sure when I can use both hands for typing but hopefully soon.  Below you’ll see some before and after pictures.  My son took one of them, (the bordered one) I used the timer for the rest.

Countdown at 0…

It’s been a while since I posted, so I have much to say, but I’ll start with the title subject, my shoulder surgery today.

I hurt this shoulder almost a full year ago, and after many painful days, (and scolding by my friends) I finally took some action. My surgery is today, in about an hour actually, and the only thing on my mind is FOOD. I’ll post a before pic:

My surgery is on my right shoulder, a labral repair (for a torn labrum) that I tore playing softball. It’ll be until at least July before I can return to sports…officially ;-) Since I’ll be “laid up” I’ll be posting with much more frequency. Also, if you ever want to initiate a discussion rather than wait for me to blog about it, visit my forums: TreoBenny.com/forums

Wish me luck!
