Champ Car & IRL agree to merger

Dario Franchitti

Scotland’s Dario Franchitti left IndyCar for Nascar last October

The owners of Champ Car and the Indy Racing League (IRL) have reached agreement in principle to unify the two competitions for the 2008 season. The new body will keep the name Indy Racing League and the competition will still be known as the IndyCar Series.

The IRL, which has the Indianapolis 500, broke away from Champ Car in 1996 but both series are battling against dwindling sponsors and attendances.

Full details have yet to be announced but tests for 2008 begin on Wednesday.

“This is a great day for open-wheel racing, one I’ve looked forward to for a long time,” said 1986 Indy 500 winner and IRL race team co-owner Bobby Rahal.

“This is the first step to restorng open-wheel racing and the Indianapolis 500 not only to where it was but beyond.”

IRL boss Tony George is expected to pay Champ Car teams who join the new series about $1.2m for chassis and engines that conform to IndyCar rules. About six teams are expected to sign up, with the rest folding.

Which races will be run in the combined series has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected that IndyCar will pick up one or two prime Champ Car events such as Australia and Long Beach, California.

George, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, failed in a bid to take control of Champ Car in 1994.

Instead, he opted to pull the famed Indianapolis 500 out of the series to establish the breakaway IRL.

For eight years, the rivals battled, the IRL mainly on oval tracks and Champ Car, or Championship Auto Racing Teams (Cart) as it was then known, mostly on road circuits with more non-US events.

Cart went bankrupt in 2003 and emerged as Champ Car in 2004 to battle on for another four seasons.

The deal ends several near-miss merger attempts and could revitalise the IndyCar circuit as well as its showpiece race, the Indy 500. The 92nd Indy 500 is set for 25 May.

New Look…

It’s 1:30am and I should be sleeping. If I’m not sleeping I should be doing schoolwork. Instead, I just had a breakthrough…

I downloaded a new template for this blog, (no, that’s not it.) I really like the layout, and the original header image is pretty cool. Very metropolitan:

I think to myself, “as cool as this image is, I’d rather have my logo there.” I’m thinking all I have to do is log in as the Admin and select a different image. I was SOOO wrong. Turns out I had to edit the php script that tells the page where to find the image. Oh, I had to discover which script that was ;-) Once I did that, I found the images folder, then resized my logo so it would fit without distortion.

I’m very proud of myself…now I can go to bed…

If you have questions about anything I just said, leave me a comment and I’ll explain in more detail. Just not tonight :-)

Saturday Morning Schoolwork Never Tasted So Good…

I get really excited about food and drink in general. But when it comes to food or beverages I made myself, I get super excited!

Last night I went to bed early with the plan to get up early today and get some schoolwork done. I executed the sleep part to a tee and got up around 7. I went out to get milk for my coffee. Ironically, I don’t drink much coffee at home, but I’m known for my regular and voracious coffee drinking at work ;-) The truth is, I’m a coffee lover, not a coffee drinker. I love coffee enough to settle for a free lack-luster cup each morning, but if I’m going to take the time and energy to make coffee at home, it’s gonna be GOOD.

I bought some ground coffee from Lavazza recently (Crema Gusto something or other) and retrieved my press pot from a friend’s house just homemadecap yesterday. I would normally drink cream (half & half) in brewed coffee, but I decided to try out a cappuccino-like drink this weekend. It’s not quite latte, not quite cafe au lait, not quite cappuccino, but ALL GOOD! I started with a full pot (I have an 8-cup press) of fine ground coffee. While it was brewing I put a little milk in a pot, I’d say 2 cups. Once the milk started to get mad, I poured the coffee from the press into a large mug big enough to hold all 8 cups. I washed the press and got it ready for the milk. A split second before the milk boiled, I took it off the heat and poured it in the press. Then I plunged up and down, fairly deliberately, to froth the milk. All the way to the bottom, then all the way up, back and forth.

BIV was standing there as I was doing this and noticed the milk getting higher and higher in the press. He says “How are you making the milk bigger Daddy?” He’s so cute…

I filled a cup half with coffee, half with the milk. While it’s still warm the milk and froth are in the perfect ratio and I didn’t need to use a spoon at all. The picture above is after a few sips (I couldn’t resist) and with a little nutmeg on top. All days should start this way…

I don’t have the time or energy to say much, but I do want to thank those of you that have contributed thus far.

The 500!!!

The NASCAR season has official begun! For those of you that don’t know me, I’m a HUGE motor sports fan. My driver, Kasey Kahne has a new sponsor, Budweiser. Last year he was sponsored by the United Auto 9bud-anonWorkers  and Nationwide Dodge Dealers. Many drivers switched teams and sponsors so it was a little difficult to keep everybody straight. Luckily, Kasey’s new sponsor uses the same colors as last year’s. He had a top-10 finish today and it was pretty exciting to see him up front all day.

Getting Started…

As you can see, I’ve been searching for a font/color combination. I’ve finally settled in on one that I like…now I can focus on writing, kinda :-)

021508 Picture 5
Just before takeoff at O’Hare In Starbucks at the MOA in Minneapolis

This tool that I use, Windows Live Writer is pretty cool. It adds a drop shadow to the pics I place by default and was very helpful is aligning the two pics of different sizes. I’ve been sitting here for almost 90 minutes, the girls behind the counter have been very nice, (I did actually buy something.) But, I think I’ll take leave of Starbucks and maybe pick up some jewelry for myself.

On another note, I just remembered that I have shower gel in my Pullman, which is in my friend’s car. With the standing temp. at -14C, I think it’s like putting it in the freezer at home. We’ll find out won’t we?…LOL!

Mild to Moderate Excitement

Ok, who am I kidding, I’m excited all around! I’ll explain:

Today I’m taking a trip, on a plane. I’ve only flown once before and that was relatively recently. The point is, flying is still very exciting to me. Not only am I excited about the fact I’m flying, the purpose of my trip holds enough excitement on its own.

Well, I suppose you’re not officially a blogger until you’ve posted from the runway…count me in…next post from MSP!

…Valentine’s Day…

I personally am a big fan of this day, (and a little surprised it wasn’t my first post of the day.) But, you have to be careful because for some, the subject is akin to religion or politics.

My Valentine this year is certainly not the biggest proponent of the whole idea, but I think I’m wearing down her bias against it ;-) Overall I think it’s a fun concept, (a day dedicated to romance/affection,) and I’m confident if we as overlapping societies applied more energy towards why we like each other rather than what we dislike about each other we’d just overall be happier. It could be a Western thing…I mean it’s pretty sad that we need a formal day for romance and affection. I get the sense that cultures across the ocean are built from the various forms of love rather than it being footnote, (which is sure how it feels here sometimes.)

Thurs-Friday

I’m taking a weekend trip starting tomorrow so today feels as much like Friday as it does Thursday. I got an early start to the day so hopefully that helps things run smooth. Welcome to those from FaceBook! I have much to say about why each of us should manage our own domains rather than use something the likes of MySpace or Facebook, but I’ll keep this post light-hearted. :-)
